A new stay-at-home order issued in California has led to the forced closure of most of the state’s poker rooms.

California Governor Gavin Newsom issued to stay-at-home order for the Southern California region and the San Joaquin Valley on Sunday. The order was triggered when ICU capacity at hospitals in the areas dropped below 15 percent. Reports indicated that in Southern California the rates dropped to 12.5 percent, while in the San Joaquin Valley it cratered to 8.6 percent.

How does this affect poker rooms in California?

Under the order most indoor businesses in the region must close. This includes poker rooms as well as bars, wineries, movie theatres, gyms and museums. The order will remain in place for at least three weeks and will not be lifted until ICU capacity gets back over 15 percent.

Just under 90 percent of all of California’s poker rooms are located in the two affected areas. In Southern California, which includes Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange County, well-known poker rooms that were forced to close include the Bicycle Casino, Commerce Casino, Hawaiian Gardens, Hustler Casino and Hollywood Park.

A small amount of poker rooms located in the northern area of the state remain open, but they could also be forced to close if the area hospital ICUs become overrun like they have in the southern area. Any tribal casinos and poker rooms in the affected areas are also exempt from the state’s mandated closure.

California’s poker rooms were originally forced to close in March when the pandemic’s first wave hit. The Governor did allow them to reopen for a short time June before closures were again implemented in July. To work around this second closure many poker rooms opened outdoor areas which until Sunday were allowed to remain open under the rules. Under the current closure rules poker rooms will not be able to reopen until December 27 at the earliest.
