Here are my picks for the 10 best shields for mage.
This video should be taken as a general guideline to help you decide what magic gear to buy next in Oldschool Runescape. This will cover gear spanning from a.
you can of course use any shield, but I left off anything with a magic penalty, as that would have left the list wide open to all shields. I also limited the field to shields (but check out the honorable mentions for non-shield items that you can wield in that slot).

- Guthix is the second best, or the book of choice if you're too poor for the Zammy book. The main usability of the book is for that attack bonuses in range (being best shield for safe spot ranging with a crossbow/knives/darts.) and in magic (being the second best shield for mage att bonus, also the cheapest one for a decent bonus).
Also worth mentioning that all of these shields have no range penalties, making them the best range shields as well. (Of course you can’t use a bow and shield together, but if you are training with darts/knives, this is the list to use).
The Top Ten
10. Wooden Shield: This has the distinction of being the weakest shield in the game, but they are free.
Def Stats: Stab +4 Slash +5, Crush +3, Magic +1, Range +4. No Att Stats.
9. Training Shield: The stereotypical noob item. It actually ties with the wooden shield in terms of stats and usability, as for all intents and purposes they are the same item with just a different look.
8. Elemental Shield: For a long time this was one of the few alternatives mages had for a shield, so even though it is useless against anything but mage here, it gets a spot.
Def: +6 Magic
7. Anti- Dragon Shield: This is easily the best F2P mage shield. With it’s def bonus and lack of magic penalties it is quite a useful item, also a must for members when fighting dragons.
Def Stats: Stab +7 Slash +9, Crush +8, Magic +2, Range +8. No Att Stats.
6. Mind Shield: From Elemental Workshop 2, this shield is good if you are fighting something that uses a magic attack, but not much else.
Def: +9 Magic
5. Mirror Shield: A necessity for some slayer tasks, this is also a cheap shield to use that has no mage penalties.
Def Stats: Stab +10 Slash +15, Crush +10, Magic +5, Range +10. No Att Stats.
Tip: Make sure to buy this from the GE, it is about 1/2 the shop price.
4. Broodoo Shield: These ‘scary broodoo shields’ are actually not bad. As long as you can get over the taunts of noob, they are a very cheap and effective option.
Def Stats: Stab +10, Slash +10, Crush +15, Magic +4. Att Stats: +3 mage.
3. Spirit Shield: At 60k this shield is a bargain, great stats and no penalties. It looks cool as well as being proof of having completed the hardest quest in the game.
Def Stats: Stab +39, Slash +41, Crush +50, Magic +1, Range +45. No Att bonus
2. Blessed Spirit Shield: At 1/25 the price of the Arcane Spirit Shield it offers the same def stats without the magic bonus. An affordable alternative if you are not safe spotting and need the protection.
Def Stats: Stab +53 Slash +55, Crush +173, Magic +2, Range +52. No Att Stats.
Worth the investment? Nope.
1. Arcane Spirit Shield: At 113mil, this better be a great shield, and it is.
Def Stats: Stab +53 Slash +55, Crush +173, Magic +2, Range +52. Att Stats: +20 Magic.
Why: +20 mage bonus, the best in the game.
Honorable Mention
Spectral Spirit Shield: There is no mage bonus on this shield, but it offers the best magic defense available with no mage penalty, but at it’s current cost of 93mil, it is nothing but an item to show off your wealth.
Crystal Shield: If you have high mage, this is also a great option. The defensive stats are better than the Spirit Shield, and approach the enhanced spirit shields, with only a small -10 penalty. I think it is also one of the coolest looking shields of the game.
Unholy Book: Not a shield, but this is the item of choice to use if you are safe spotting. The initial cost is high, but since they are replaced for free it makes a great addition to any mage/range pvp outfit.
Mage’s Book: Also not a shield, but for a long time this shield slot item had the best mage bonus of any item in the game. It was hard to get and not too common though. A well used mage training arena autoing program brought the supply up to the point of it being more affordable.
Square Shields: These aren’t the best to use, but it is not widely known that they have no mage def penalty so your spells will not hit as hard as they would on an opponent using a kite shield.

10. Arcane Spirit Shield
Approximate Price: 140,000,000 gp
Like the Elysian Spirit Shield, you craft the Arcane Spirit Shield by attaching a sigil, in this case Arcane sigil, to a blessed spirit shield. It has the same defense stats as the base shield with an additional magic attack bonus of +20.
9. Ancestral Robes Set
Approximate Price: 140,000,000 gp
Best In Slot Mage Shield Osrs Stats
The Ancestral Robes Set peaked at nearly 400 million gp, but over time has steadily declined in value. Still, at 140 million it’s still worth enough to make this list. To obtain the set, you can exchange items for it via the Grand Exchange clerk.
8. 3rd Age Cloak
Approximate Price: 195,000,000 gp
At nearly 200 million gp, the 3rd Age Cloak requires 65 Prayer to wear and has the same stats as the trimmed Skillcape +1 additional prayer point.
7. 3rd Age Axe
Approximate Price: 390,000,000 gp
The 3rd Age Axe isn’t better stats-wise than the Dragon Axe, as it has the same cutting speed and special attack, but it sure is worth a whole lot more. To wield it, you need 65 Attack and 61 Cutting.
6. 3rd Age Longsword
Approximate Price: 460,000,000 gp
The 3rd Age Longsword is the strongest longsword in oldschool RuneScape. As such, it fetches a pretty penny in the market. The only way to obtain it is by completing the elite and master Treasure Trails, with a drop rate of 1/488,750 and 1/313,168 respectively.
5. 3rd Age Bow
Approximate Price: 490,000,000 gp
The 3rd Age Bow requires 65 Ranged to wield and packs some power. It has the same attack speed as shortbows with the range of a longbow. It last sold for nearly 490 million gp.
4. Elysian Sigil
Approximate Price: 650,000,000 gp
Given the value of the Elysian Spirit Shield, it makes sense that one of the key components, the Elysian Sigil, would also be extremely valuable.
The chances of obtaining the sigil as a drop from the Corporal Beast is just 1/4,095.
3. Elysian Spirit Shield
Approximate Price: 685,000,000 gp
The Elysian Spirit Shield is one of the strongest shields in oldschool RuneScape, hence its high price. It has better Melee and Ranged stats than the spectral spirit and arcane shields but its passive, which gives a 70% chance of reducing all standard damage by 25%, is what makes it particularly powerful.
To make an Elysian Spirit Shield, you first need to obtain an Elysian Sigil from the Corporeal Beast, then attach it to a blessed spirit shield. You either need 90 Prayer and 85 Smithing or pay 1,500,000 gp to Abbot Langley to make it for you.
2. 3rd Age Pickaxe
Approximate Price: 930,000,000 gp
The second most valuable item is the 3rd Age Pickaxe. Like all 3rd Age equipment in RuneScape, it’s worth a lot due to its rarity as it can only be obtained from the hardest tiers of Treasure Trails.
It has the exact same stats as the Dragon Pickaxe except that it’s lighter. Generally it exchanges hands between merchers and collectors who want to own all the rares.

1. Twisted Bow
Approximate Price: 1,000,000,000 gp
The Twisted Bow is the strongest bow in oldschool RuneScape, and also happens to be the most valuable item coming in at a whopping 1 billion gp. Unlike most weapons that have a fixed damage, the Twisted Bow’s damage scales with the enemy’s magic level – the stronger your enemy, the more damage it does, up to a maximum of 89 damage with Dragon arrows and 99 Ranged skill.
To obtain the Twisted Bow, you can complete the Chambers of Xeric, which has a 2.38% chance of dropping it. Like most of the items on this list, you can also purchase the Twisted Bow through the Grand Exchange.

You’ll notice most of the most valuable items are 3rd Age items. While they look great and are some of the rarest items in game, 3rd Age equipment isn’t necessarily always the strongest in class. The items below are best in stats of their class:
